Licenses amp Procedures. Under the Mines amp Minerals Act No. 33 of 1992, the GSMB issues three types of licenses, i.e., Exploration, Mining, Trading and Transport. Sri Lanka has exported 15,876 tonnes of ilmenite to China in 2008, down from 20,836 tonnes a year before. India was the second largest buyers with 5,783 tonnes and Japan was third at 500 tonnes.
However, mining activities on large scale are confined mainly to a few minerals - Heavy Mineral Sands, China Clay and to a lesser extent LimestoneLimeshell, Silica Sand and Granite. In fact, Heavy mineral sand and China Clay contribute more than 90 of the total value of mineral production in the State.
